Mark (Tony) Redman – My Journey

I was raised in a humble, middle-class family in Trinidad and Tobago, with a teacher for a mother and a police officer for a father. From an early age, I was taught to “do the right thing.” Under the guidance of a devout Catholic educator and a father who upheld the law, I learned to assess problems from two critical perspectives: the rational, data-driven approach and the moral and legal lens of fairness and justice. I grew up believing that authority figures would always act with integrity and that good would ultimately triumph.

In 1970, my family migrated to Canada, and though it was a land of opportunity, adjusting to the social dynamics was far from easy. I found myself academically ahead but physically and emotionally behind. At just 11 years old, I entered grade 8, becoming the youngest and only Black student in a classroom filled with 13- and 14-year-olds. That experience introduced me to a world of resentment and bullying. Despite those difficult adolescent years, I remained grounded in my values and committed to growth.

My Professional Journey

My career path has been shaped by a search for “an employer worth serving.” Throughout my work in various sectors and organizations, I often encountered leaders making decisions that conflicted with my deep sense of fairness and justice. This fueled my passion for advocating change and getting involved in union work and NGO advocacy.

In 1999, my career took a significant turn when I was selected as a Systemic Change Facilitator for the Ministry of Correctional Services in Ontario. I traveled the province delivering anti-racism training, often to challenging audiences. That experience was personally and professionally transformative. For personal reasons, I changed my legal name from Mark Anthony Garrick to Mark Anthony Redman in 2001.

In 2003, I returned to Trinidad and established Redman Consulting & Paralegal Services, building on my systemic change work. I had the privilege of working alongside some of the Caribbean’s most accomplished consultants, which broadened my expertise in Organization Development, Human Relations, and systemic transformation. During this time, I also pursued personal growth, immersing myself in the works of thought leaders such as John C. Maxwell, Stephen Covey, and Malcolm Gladwell. These experiences deepened my understanding of the interconnected systems shaping our world.

My Current Outlook and Objectives

Today, I bring a unique perspective, honed by years of navigating diverse environments, to address the complex challenges organizations face. My approach to problem-solving is rooted in clarity, analysis, and action:

  1. Clearly define and contextualize the problem.
  2. Conduct a deep analysis of contributing factors, root causes, and potential responses.
  3. Identify and implement the best available solution, informed by all relevant data.

In returning to Canada, I founded Advocates for Change (A4C) to channel my passion for fostering positive organizational and community development. A4C serves as a platform for delivering innovative, solution-oriented services in three core areas:

  • Conflict Management and ADR: Facilitating win-win solutions, achievable agreement and healthy relationships.
  • Human Relations: Promoting Human Rights, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).
  • Leadership and Personal Development: Supporting systemic transformation through Spiritual Intelligence and Effective Leadership Skills.

Through A4C, I remain committed to creating equitable, inclusive, and sustainable environments where individuals and organizations can thrive. My work is about building bridges, fostering understanding, and empowering people to achieve their highest potential.

Let’s collaborate to make meaningful, systemic change. Together, we can create a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.
